"Nations have always cycled through phases of birth-rise-maturity-decline-perish. Rise and Decline: Where We Are and What We Can Do About It examines six republics from Ancient Athens to the United States to show that life of a nation depends upon the degree to which its citizens accept the nation's founding principles - its raison d'etre. The United States is in decline, but we can change things... if we will.
This is the third book from Bruce Thatcher (Iowa State, Alpha Phi '56). Thatcher and his wife, Carol, retired from their successful consulting firm and moved to the Texas hill country in 2007. He started History Speaks Today (www.historyspeakstoday.com), a project dedicated to bringing history's practical lessons to the attention of Americans and our leaders. The first two HST books are Adamant Aggressors: How to Identify and Deal With Them and Immigration: How To Avoid Its Perils and Make It Work.
Thatcher's mantra is "understanding history's lessons may not ensure making the best choices today or in the future... but it will make us better able to reject demonstrated bad choices and, thus, more likely arrive at better choices."
